It's Been Awhile

It's summer, and my life is boring. I work every day, in the sweltering heat of stinky NYC. I say stinky because in the past week the first scents to greet me in the morning have been the stank of urine, pidgeon dirt, and the joy of getting stuck in the trail of EXTREME garbage odor from Sanitation. Needless to say, when I get to my office, I stay there, in the A/C, until the day is over. On Monday, I'm already looking forward to Friday, to lazy days at the beach; to building sandcastles with my nephew; to my Caribbean vacation in October.

But, I digress....

I'm really here to talk about the little things. The tiny moments of sunshine that make me giddy at unexpected moments. The smell of fresh-cut flowers in the morning, when not inundated with garbage or dirty birds or pee. Yes, I actually do stop and smell the flowers. It's not just a cliche. Seeing an old couple holding hands so gently that you can tell through this innocent gesture how much they still love one another after decades together. Finding out my boss is going to be out for a few days. Woo Hoo! That means I get to leave work early. Discovering $5 in my winter coat, which promptly gets spent at Starbucks. I swear, that coffee juggernaut is proliferating faster than cockroaches after the apocalypse. But I can't resist the Mocha Fraps or Decaf Lattes.

There I go again...

Might as well quit while I am ahead. Have a pleasant tomorrow!
